Telewizja po 20 latach przerwy. 20 years break in watching tv

Przygnębia mnie to.
To dobry znak.

Sometimes I think that our family case would be an excellent research material for scientists. We unknowingly made an experiment that lasted about 20 years. More or less, we have not watched television for so many years. And not to watch television in the modern world, it's a bit like living on a deserted island that almost nothing can reach. The narrative of modern social life takes place on television screens. Information, journalistic, scientific programs, entertainment and, above all, advertisements tell millions of the present, and what is even more important, they shape it through this story. What happens to people who do not have access to it? And what happens when access is recovered after 20 years? How do they receive the message?
Of course, let's make it clear from the beginning: in the meantime, the Internet was created, the telephone and the computer were to a certain extent a substitute for television. The information reached us through other channels, so the comparison with a secluded island is not exactly right. However, there is one major difference between the message provided by the television and the internet transmission. In the case of the Internet, I myself create a narrative, I am looking for information according to my own key, I choose the content with which I want to commune. Nobody imposes on me topics that I will reflect on a given day. For example, if I'm fascinated with the painting of Modigliani this Wednesday, I will be looking for information about him all day, I will see his paintings, I will see a document on You Tube about this painter, check in which museums in Europe I can see his works live. So this day I will devote to the issue that interests me, which I chose. If you use television, a program set by someone else will write my day and decide what my mind will do. I will see a program about renovations of flats, I will find out that there was a fire in the area, then I will move to the kitchen of some famous chef and watch how he prepares broccoli and goulash, then I will worry about seeing the top of plastic garbage in the Indian Ocean and experience trauma of  the II World War just before I go to sleep. Above all, however, I will find out during the day about what is missing in my life, what I do not have, what to aspire for and what to dream about. I will see countless ads (though probably counted by the media researchers). The opponent will say: you can change channels and choose what you watch and what you do not. Truth. In the theory it is truth. In reality, you usually watch "what's going on". I do not know anyone who would plan with a pen and a notebook to watch only selected programs. Yes it does not work. Not to mention the intrusive advertising blocks that completely devour the television.
Another matter are mirror neurons, small structures in our brains that make us smile while a watched man is laughing, or seeing someone who is desperate we feel his sadness, and we feel fear when we see the murder. This is not just about empathy, whose level each of us is different. It is about the functioning of our brain, which in the course of evolution has created extremely useful social mechanisms of compassion, which, however, at the same time lead our brains into error. If we see a scene of rape in a film, for our brain viewing such things is tantamount to taking part in this situation. The brain at the neural level does not distinguish between viewing violence on the television screen and watching violence live. I admit that for me to find out about this fact was shocking information. The stress we experience "only" by watching murders on tv is huge. Even if we do not consciously realize it. Even if we deny it. Even if we're crowding out. Why am I writing about it? Because not watching TV for almost 2 decades and now touching this medium, I experience its huge impact on myself. I mean all the sphere of emotions and the intensity of watched programs. For me, watching one episode of the drug smugglers series ("Narcos") was associated with five wake-up calls at night. Each time I woke up I had cruel murders, shots, blood, bodies of the dead before my eyes. To all this, I experience difficulties with falling asleep. Not only due to charging with emotions such as fear, horror, disgust. I think that in the case of problems with falling asleep, it is also about "lighting" the blue light coming from the TV screen and disturbing the circadian rhythm by limiting the secretion of melatonin in the brain. Until now, at bedtime, I read, painted, knitted, sewed, and sometimes, yes, I was browsing the internet on my phone. I have never experienced problems falling asleep in my life. Never. Now very, very often. There is one remedy for this, but I will write about it later.
In a home where television is present, the conversation is also lost. Not completely of course. But when colorful, huge pictures are flashing and someone speaks from the speakers - everyone else is silent. I watch my own children who just freeze, stand still, stiffen. They are not present in the room, only their bodies sit on the sofa, and they swim away with their thoughts and their entire being. I feel sadness then. After watching the session of cartoons they are aggressive, nervous, push, argue, tease each other. I feel anger at myself then. That I went on the easy way, that they were staring too long at this screen again, that maybe some inappropriate films they were watching. It depresses me. After twenty years of not watching TV I also observe another interesting reaction. It is excessive attention in watching the message, the lack of proper filters in the brain to sifting out what is media junk from what is important. Initially, watching the ads I treated them too seriously, remembering all the information contained in them. I do not know exactly how to describe it, to be understandable. The point is that every pseudo-information from the advertisement was treated by my brain as the information. And additionaly like a very important information. It's a bit like watching advertisements like it was a news program. Increased concentration, accurate listening to the content and form of the message. Woman! Not so! Don't watch it like this, don't listen so closely. Advertisements have to pass through man like diarrhea.
So, do I notice something good in watching TV after these 20 years of abstinence? Yes of course. With as many years as I have, I am already aware that I will never see a lot of things in my life. Things that I would like to see. Other people have done it for me. With the camera they reach where I will not. I can see the world that is inaccessible to me through their eyes. And I'm happy about it. I experience, thanks to mirror neurons, their good, beautiful emotions, joys, feelings, curiosity, delight and concern for the world, for others, for all of us. Yesterday evening, for example, I was swimming in the Indian Ocean watching one of the great episodes of Simon Reeves' program on BBC I-player. And again the same: it was my choice, my decision, what would I experience that evening, what I would take with me to bed for the night, which emotions and images will accompany me during my sleep. I did not wake up at night. It's a good sign. I either learned to watch TV properly or TV taught me that. And this is a remedy for insomnia, which I mentioned earlier. The right choice of content.
